Exercise and recreational resources available at the PEIF Leave a comment

The PEIF is NMU’s recreational and physical fitness center and offers many different facilities open to all students throughout each semester. Home to a weight room, two basketball courts, six racquetball courts, a golf simulator and many more opportunities to keep students entertained and physically active, the PEIF is the go-to for staying active during the semester. The PEIF also hosts many services such as swimming lessons and American Red Cross certification courses. All services and facilities are open to students with a student rec pass.

“Students can purchase their membership on site and the $85 rec fee will be charged to their student account. Associate Athletic Director of Campus Recreation Trisha Bush said. “Within the PEIF, the recreation center is open so students can come in and workout as well as shoot hoops, use the racquetball courts, fitness room or climbing wall.”

Students also have the option of visiting a sister location known as The Wildcat Fit Zone, located between Magers/Meyland and Hunt/Van Antwerp Resident hall. Although not open in the summer, the Fit Zone provides easy access to physical activity to residents during their busy class schedules during the fall and winter semesters. The Fit Zone is also accessible with the purchase of a student rec pass.

“Occupying the roughly 10,500 square feet of facility space are 15 cardio pieces (treadmills, bikes, stair climber and ellipticals), hand weights ranging from five pounds to 50, plyometric equipment, a cable cross as well as a fitness studio (which is available for rent as well as group fitness classes.)” Bush Said.

The PEIF is still accessible this summer, but due to pool renovations all aquatic activities will be suspended until construction is complete in early August. Along with the construction, certain functions of the PEIF will also be closed.

“The PEIF pool is undergoing renovations at this time and is scheduled to be closed until August 1st.” Bush Said. “Due to the pool repairs the steam is also shut off which means cold showers only at this time.”

Rental services are available for many outdoor activities with equipment ranging from camping gear to fat tire bikes.

“Equipment rentals are available to everyone. Students can access free rentals on the following equipment: fat tire bikes, hammocks, disc golf, backpacks and sleeping bags,” Bush said. “Tents, kayaks and stand up paddleboards can be rented at a discounted rate. Although restrictions have been lessened on campus with the new vaccination policies it is still too early to tell what can be expected this fall as far as activities and services provided.

“As far as programs go, we cannot predict what guidelines will be in place for group activities.” Bush said. “We will have to wait and see how the summer goes and will make plans for fall by August when we have more information on specific requirements from the university and state.”
